Macbeth Translations
The banquet is prepared. Enter Macbeth, Lady Macbeth, Ross, Lennox, Lords, and Attendants.
Macbeth: Welcome, and please sit down. Lords: Thank you, your majesty. Macbeth: I will talk with you and be a humble host. The hostess isn't here, but we’d like her to come! Lady Macbeth: I’m so happy to be here, welcome everyone! Macbeth: Now everyone, please eat and sit down. We will drink soon. (To the Murderer). There is blood on your face. Murderer: It’s Banquo’s blood. Macbeth: It's better on you than inside him. Is he dead? Murderer: My lord, his throat is cut. Macbeth: You are the best murderer. Did you also kill Fleance? Murderer: My king, Fleance escaped. Macbeth: (Aside). I am angry again. It would have been perfect like marble and strong as a rock, as free as the air, but now I am confined to doubt and fear. (to Murderer) But Banquo’s dead. Murderer: Yes, my king, he lies dead in a ditch with 20 gashes on his head. It was not a natural death. Macbeth: Thank you. There the grown serpent, Banquo, lies. The baby serpent that fled will become vengeful, now he is harmless. Leave. Tomorrow we will talk again. Lady Macbeth: Macbeth, come and entertain our guests. Eating is best at home, so we must entertain with ceremony. This meeting is meaningless without it. Enter Ghost of Banquo. Macbeth to Lady Macbeth: Oh my god, I have lost my appetite. Lennox: Please sit down, your Highness. Macbeth: We are glad to have so many honored guests under our roof tonight. If only Banquo were here, I would be happier. Ross: His absence makes him untruthful to his word. Please, your highness, grace us with your company. Macbeth: The table is full. Lennox: Here is a place reserved for you. Macbeth: Where? Lennox: Here. Are you okay your highness? Macbeth: Which of you has done this? Lords: What my good lord? Macbeth: (To the Ghost) I cannot say that I did it. Do not shake your hand at me. Ross: Rise everyone, his highness is sick. Lady Macbeth: Sit, friends. My lord is often sick and has been from his youth, please keep sitting. The fit is temporary. In a minute, he will be well. If you take note of him, he will be offended. Keep eating and ignore him. (to Macbeth) Are you a man? Macbeth: yes, and a brave one that looked straight at the devil. Lady Macbeth: You are ridiculous. This is a painting of fear, like the dagger you said led to you Duncan. It is a made up story that will be told around the fire. Why do you make such faces? Macbeth: Look there, behold look. (To the Ghost) What do you have to say? Why do I care? If you can nod, speak too. If our graves must send back the dead, our burial monuments will be the stomachs of birds of prey. Lady Macbeth: You are un-manned by this foolishness. Macbeth: I stand here and I see him. Lady Macbeth: For shame. Macbeth: Blood has been shed here. Murders have been committed. They are too terrible to hear. Brains were bashed out and men died. That is the end, but now they rise again. This is more strange than murder. Lady Macbeth: My king, your friends would like your company. Macbeth: I forget. Do not laugh at me, my friends. I have a strange disorder that does not bother those who know me well. Come, sit and eat. Wine, please. (Enter Banquo’s Ghost) I drink to everyone's health. I drink to our friend Banquo, whom we miss very much. Lords: To us! Macbeth: (to ghost) Leave my sight! You have no bones and your blood is cold. Your eyes, which glare at me, cannot see! Lady Macbeth: This is a common occurrence, my friends. It only ruins our good time. Macbeth: I am as brave as anyone. Come at me in the form of a Russian bear, an armored rhinoceros, or tiger. Take any shape but the one you are in, and I will have nerves of steel. Or come back to life and fight me in the desert. If I am a coward then, I would be but a little girl. Leave, you shadow, you mockery, leave! (Exit Ghost) With you gone, I am a man again. Please, all of you, stay. Lady Macbeth: You have ruined the mood with your crazy actions. Macbeth: can events like these suddenly cover us like a cloud in summer and not leave us amazed? I don't understand how you keep the color in your cheeks when mine are drained of color. Ross: What did you see? Lady Macbeth: Please do not talk to him. He is getting worse. Questions make him mad. Please, leave now. Leave, all at once, with no attention to rank. Lennox: Goodnight and better health to the king. Lady Macbeth: Goodnight! (Everyone but Macbeth and Lady Macbeth leave) Macbeth: Blood results in more blood. Stones move and trees speak to bring men to justice. Murder have been exposed by crows and magpies. What time is it? Lady Macbeth: It’s almost morning, not that it matters. Macbeth: What do you think about Macduff refusing to come when we invite him. Lady Macbeth: Did you invite him? Macbeth: I heard it, but I will send someone. I have a servant soy in his castle. Early tomorrow, I will go see the Weird Sisters. They will tell me more because I need to know. Nothing is more important than my well being. I am halfway across the river. It is just as dangerous to finish crossing as it would be to return. I have strange things planned that I must Donnie before I change my mind. Lady Macbeth: You haven't slept. Macbeth: Let's go to sleep. My fear is a delusion. We are still young and inexperienced.

Enter Lady Macbeth and a Servant.
Lady Macbeth: Where is Banquo? Servant: He comes back tonight. Lady Macbeth: Tell the king to come talk to me when he arrives. Servant: Yes my lady. Lady Macbeth (to herself): We have given everything and received nothing, and we are not happy. It is better to be murdered that to live unhappily. Lady Macbeth (to Macbeth, who has arrived): What is wrong? You should not be worrying about the murders because what's done is done. Macbeth: I will always be afraid, and it haunts me every night. I wish I were dead rather than alive in this hell. Duncan is lucky because he is sleeping peacefully in his grave and cannot be hurt by anything else. Lady Macbeth: Relax, my lord. Be happy for your guests tonight. Macbeth: I know and I will. Be sure to be extra nice to Banquo, we need to hide our guilt and our true feelings. Lady Macbeth: You must stop talking about this. Macbeth: My mind is full of scorpions, dear wife! Banquo and Fleance are still alive. Lady Macbeth: They cannot live forever. Macbeth: That is true, they can be killed. Before the bat flies and Hecate summons the shard-borne beetle has woken up, the deed will be done. Lady Macbeth: What are you going to do? Macbeth: It is better that you don’t know about it. Come, night, and hide my actions from the day and with your darkness guide me to kill Banquo. The sky is darkening, and the crows are going to the woods. Everything good is going to sleep, and predators are waking up. (to Lady Macbeth) you marvel at my words, but believe in me. They exit. Enter three Murderers.
First Murderer: Who sent you to join us? Third Murderer: Macbeth. Second Murderer (to First Murderer): We can trust him, since he reports our duties and what we have to do exactly according to our instructions from Macbeth. First Murderer: Then join us.— The sun is setting in the west. Banquo, the person we are waiting for, is approaching. Third Murderer: Wait, I hear horses. Banquo (offstage): Bring the light over here! Second Murderer: Then it’s him. Everyone included in the list of expected guests are already here. First Murderer: His horses are being led to the stables. Third Murderer: Almost a mile away, but most men walk from here to the palace gates. Enter Banquo and Fleance, with a torch. Second Murderer: There is a light, yes a light! Third Murderer: It’s him. First Murderer: Let’s get to it. Banquo (to Fleance): There’s going to be rain tonight. First Murderer: Then let it come down. ATTACK! (The three Murderers attack.) Banquo: Oh the horror! Run, innocent Fleance, run, run, run! May you avenge me one day—O you bastard! He dies. Fleance exits. Third Murderer: Who put out the light? First Murderer: Wasn’t that the best thing to do? Third Murderer: There is only one body here. The son ran away. Second Murderer: We have failed half of the mission. First Murderer: Well, let’s go and tell him what we have accomplished. They exit. The banquet is prepared. Enter Macbeth, Lady Macbeth, Ross, Lennox, Lords, and Attendants.
