INTRODUCTION SCENE
Two coaches discuss how the previous team captain, Darby, was injured in a suspicious manner. Mackenzie will now step up to the position of team captain, but she will soon have competition with Bailey, another member of the team.
Coach 1: Poor Darby, she had such a promising racing career. She was such a great captain and definitely could’ve gotten the scholarship to Cornell.
Coach 2: So how did she get injured, anyway?
Coach 1: She had a really bad accident on the trails! Her horse got spooked and she fell into the gate. It’s really unusual because Goldie never spooks. She’s normally such a good horse.
Coach 2: At least Mackenzie is able to compete and ready to step up as team captain. We know that she won’t horse around!
Coach 1: Well, with Darby out of the running, we have some tough competition between Bailey and Mackenzie.

Cut to INTRODUCTION VIDEO
SCENE 1
Mackenzie is wary of the threat that Bailey poses to her position of team captain. She has a conversation with Bailey in which she asks about Bailey’s sister, Felicity, and where both girls would be riding before the competition. Both girls wish each other luck, although they may not mean it. Bailey is suspicious of Mackenzie’s motives and the way that she became team captain in the first place. Bailey hopes to do well in the competition to be recruited for a college. Later, Bailey’s younger sister Felicity cannot wait to inherit Bailey’s horse Apollo after Bailey leaves for college.
Mackenzie: (Voice over) To be team captain is nothing, unless I am unthreatened in my position, and Bailey threatens me. She is daring and brave, and knows how to lead. I cannot have her threatening my college chances.
CUT TO COACHES, TALKING WITH THE TEAM
Coach 1: Great job today girls! You guys are looking great for the exhibition tomorrow. The college scouts will be impressed!
Coach 2: Right-o! Get some sleep tonight, you’re going to need it!
EXIT COACHES
Mackenzie: Bailey, are you nervous for the competition tomorrow?
Bailey: Yeah, it’s really stressful and college is very important to me and my family.
Mackenzie: Are you going to warm up tomorrow at Dunsinane stables?
Bailey: Yeah! See you there, Mackenzie!
Mackenzie: Great! But is your sister Felicity riding with you?
Bailey: Yeah, she eventually wants to join the team. She wants to be team captain some day!
Mackenzie: That’s awesome. Good luck to you and Apollo tomorrow.
Bailey: Good luck to you and Artemis.
EXIT MACKENZIE
Bailey: (sarcastically) Congratulations, Mackenzie… Just as everyone predicted, you are team captain, but I doubt you got that spot because you actually deserved it. I can’t believe that Darby got injured, considering that she was as cautious as a mouse while she was riding. And then Mackenzie just takes her place; it’s unbelievable. What a wise fool! You thought that by injuring Darby you could get that scholarship. (To horse) It seems very suspicious, don’t you think, Apollo? If I do well in the rodeo, the college scouts might recruit me! Maybe I’ll have a trophy smiling back at me after the rodeo.
ENTER FELICITY
Felicity: Hey Bailey! Mom’s waiting at the car. Wow, Apollo is such a good horse!
Bailey: Yeah, she’ll be yours soon once I graduate and you’re team captain.
END SCENE
SCENE 2
Mackenzie plans to injure Bailey, so she enlists two “sabotagers” to help her. Mackenzie convinces the “sabotagers” that Bailey was the cause of their unsuccessful riding careers. They agree to rig the rodeo so that Bailey and Felicity will fall off of their shared horse, Apollo.
Mackenzie: (voiceover) I injured Darby. I can do it again to Bailey. She’s just an unwitting bunny, and I’m a fox.
ENTER MACKENZIE AND TWO “SABOTAGERS”
Mackenzie: Hi, girls. Have you thought about my proposition yet? You know that it was Bailey, in the times past, that caused you to have such unsuccessful riding careers. She sabotaged your horses and didn’t teach you properly. Anyone who’s got any sense at all would be able to say that “Bailey did this”. Are you guys ready to do this? If you have any guts at all, tell me now. Once she’s taken care of, I’ll be perfectly happy.
Sabotager 1: Mackenzie, my riding career has been so terrible that I’m not bothered by any sabotaging.
Mackenzie: Every time that Bailey enters the arena, it physically hurts my heart. I’m team captain, so I could easily just cut her from the team, but we have friends in common. That’s why I’m enlisting you to injure her. (Quick cut to a scene showing the sabotagers walking towards the stables with a knife.) I have to hide my intentions from the rest of the team.
Sabotager 2: Yeah, we’ll do it. (Quick cut to the sabotagers running away from the stables.)
Mackenzie: It needs to be done today, at the rodeo. I’ll let you know the best time to do it. It’s important that you incapacitate both Bailey and Felicity. I’ll call upon both of you when it’s time.
END SCENE
SCENE 3
It is the beginning of the South Bay Rodeo. Bailey thinks that she hears Felicity in the stable near her horse, but it is really the “sabotagers” cutting her saddle. Bailey, not realizing that the cinch strap of her saddle was cut, puts the saddle on her horse Apollo. When it is Bailey’s turn to begin her run, she is thrown off Apollo and is injured. However, because of Bailey’s accident, Felicity never gets a chance to ride that day and therefore does not get injured as was planned by Mackenzie. Mackenzie is disappointed in the performance of the “sabotagers” as they had only been able to complete half of their mission.
CUT TO RODEO COMPETITION
Rodeo Announcer: Hello, competitors! And welcome to the twenty-third annual South Bay Rodeo! We have a lot of college recruiters here watching so be sure to perform to the top of your game. And, with no further ado, we have our first competitor: Lindsay Lennox and her horse Lemon!
(Murders are simultaneously sabotaging Bailey’s saddle. They run when they hear Bailey calling out, looking for Felicity.)
CUT TO STABLES
(Bailey comes out, looking for Felicity, who she believes has just left. She then prepares for her run. She places the saddle with the cut cinch strap onto Apollo, her horse.)
Bailey: Where’s Felicity? I thought she was just here.
CUT TO RODEO COMPETITION
Rodeo Announcer: Great job, Lindsay and Lemon! Now, up next, all the way from Mira Costa High School, we have Bailey Banko! Well now, look at Ms. Banko’s beautiful horse, Apollo! It’s no wonder he was named after the god of the sun because, look folks, at how bright he is! I’ve never seen such a beautiful horse in my entire career! Go ahead, Bailey!
(Bailey begins her run. She gallops forward on Apollo, and is then dramatically thrown off and injured.)
Rodeo Announcer: Oh no, folks! It looks like maybe Bailey forgot to check her saddle before she went to ride, because she has fallen off her horse!
(Cut to an injured Bailey lying motionless on the ground. She is approached by Felicity.)
Felicity: Bailey, Bailey! Are you okay? Wake up, wake up! Are you okay?
(Bailey opens her eyes and looks around.)
CUT TO SABOTAGERS AND MACKENZIE
Sabotager 1: We have some news.
Sabotager 2: Well, as you probably heard, Bailey fell off her horse at the rodeo. She injured herself!
Mackenzie: But…
Sabotager 2: But, um--
Sabotager 1: You see, Felicity didn’t go on her run, but we were close. We were really close to getting her.
Mackenzie: Close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades.
END SCENE
CUT TO COLLEGE PRESS CONFERENCE
SCENE 4
Mackenzie and her mother are sitting at the Cornell equestrian team press conference. They are being questioned by the college recruiters as well as reporters.
Mackenzie (in response to questions): Uh, yes, I do think that the ride went extremely well. We did all of our—I really bonded well with Artemis...We really did have a great run today. We cleared all of our obstacles, and Artemis is a great horse. It perfectly exemplifies all of the hard work we put into this season. Thank you.
Mrs. McBeth: Are there any more questions? Yes, you in the back?
(Mackenzie’s mind begins to wander. She looks over and sees Bailey’s ghost, a poor, injured rider, staring back at her. She gasps in horror.)
Mackenzie: Bailey! What are you doing here?
Mrs. McBeth: Mackenzie! Are you--
Mackenzie: Bailey! Are you— Oh my god! Get out of here! No one wants you here! Whaat?
(Mrs. McBeth tries to calm Mackenzie.)
Mackenzie: No! It’s okay! Don’t you see her! She’s right there! Ahh!
Mrs. McBeth: Don’t worry, you guys! She’s okay! She’s just a little emotional because of Bailey’s injury.
(Mackenzie continues to freak out. Bailey’s ghost disappears.)
END SCENE
Voice Over: Next week, on Riding to Fate:
Mackenzie: I’ve done a lot of things that I regret, but it’s too late to turn back now. Come, fate, into the arena. I’ll beat you if it’s the last thing I do.
