Plot Summaries
ENTIRE PLOT
Mackenzie Macbeth, a high-school senior ready to move on to college, is a high-performing horse rider on her school’s equestrian team. Her parents expect a lot from her; she must become captain of the team, as well as make it onto the Cornell equestrian team. However, she’s running out of time: she’s already a senior and she hasn’t yet become captain.
In order to advance herself within the team, Mackenzie decides to injure the current team captain, Darby. After successfully knocking Darby off her authority, Mackenzie becomes team captain of the high school team. Her parents, however, still pressure her to get onto the Cornell team.
A few days later, the Cornell team scouts come to view the girls’ abilities and choose one girl for the empty spot on the team (which was supposed to be Darby’s). Mackenzie has to knock off her other competition, Bailey and Felicity, Bailey’s younger sister, in order to ensure a spot for Cornell. She calls upon two other riders to sabotage Bailey’s and Felicity’s chances at success.
After getting the spot on the college team, Mackenzie becomes arrogant and lazy with her schoolwork and riding. She gives up because she’s already gotten her scholarship to Cornell. Mackenzie also becomes guilt-ridden, constantly thinking about Bailey’s injuries. She ends up losing her good grades and school work. Due to her arrogance, Mackenzie gets her scholarship revoked, and loses everything.
ACT III
After Darby’s unfortunate accident, Mackenzie begins to fear that her potential spot on the college equestrian team has been compromised. She feels threatened by her friend (and competitor) Bailey, as well as the prodigy rider Felicity, Bailey’s younger sister.
In order to take out her competition, Mackenzie convinces two fellow riders that they have been unsuccessful in their equestrian endeavours because of Bailey and Felicity. She persuades them to alter the saddle of the sisters’ shared horse, sabotaging their chances of winning. Bailey ends up competing first, and she is thrown off her horse (mid-race) and injured.
After securing her spot on the college team, Mackenzie is ready to attend the college team press conference. Shortly after arriving, she begins to feel guilt for the crimes she has committed against Bailey. Due to a lack of sleep, she hallucinates and sees Bailey’s injured body sitting in the back of the room. She freaks out and starts yelling at Bailey’s image. Her mother tries to hide her delusions, but Mackenzie is already haunted forever.
